Notes from the Director

May 2013

God has given each one of us a task, which we can perform better than anyone else. We must find out what that task is, and how to do it in the best way possible.
– Helen Keller

One of the best things about Family Promise is the myriad of ways people can volunteer. Usual ways include bringing dinner to the church, eating with our homeless guests, and staying overnight to offer support and assistance. These volunteer opportunities are the foundation of our program, and enlist the talents of roughly 30 dedicated people per week.

So what if cooking or sleeping overnight at a church are not your idea of the best way to use your talents? I think we all need to look at the special gifts we have been given, and find out what makes us truly come alive. What is the one thing that you really want to share with someone less fortunate than you? What is it that makes your life brighter?

Here are some examples of what others have done: house angels that fix items around our Family Day Center (thanks Ray and Bob!); yard angels that care for our outside area; hair stylists that donate services; massage therapists that bring their talents to the church or day center; empty nesters that share food from Costco with single parent graduates of Family Promise (thanks Jack and Jane!); curtain makers and garage salers (thanks, Dottie!); furniture donaters; used vehicle donaters; photographers; birthday cake bakers; and, oh, so many more!

Do you love children? Would you like to volunteer to provide childcare while our parents go to a class? Do you like to shop? Would you like to find items for a graduating family’s first home?

What is the task God has given you? Come and share!
