Volunteer Spotlight(s): September

Volunteers of the Month-The Hammars!

Volunteers of the Month-The Hammars!

I am very proud to announce our September Volunteer (s) of the Month Spotlight…Glen and Chris Hammar! This stellar couple has made quite a name for themselves with our families.

I always say that the heart of our program are our Volunteer Coordinators. They keep all the pieces of the Family Promise machine working smoothly. Volunteer Coordinators dedicate an incredible amount of time to organizing hosting weeks and supporting their congregation’s volunteers. The Hammars have been long-time volunteers of Family Promise. Recently, they have stepped into new roles as Volunteer Coordinators for the LDS congregations. They recently began to work alongside Fred and Joyce Parsons, longtime LDS Volunteer Coordinators, to support our program.

Since stepping up as Volunteer Coordinators, we have heard only RAVE reviews about these two from our families. We have recently had families graduate our program and they always ask if we can invite the Hammars to their celebrations.

A BIG thank you to Glen and Chris Hammar for their dedication to our program and their ability to always meet our families where they are at. Thank you! Now…let’s learn a little bit more about this dynamic duo!

Name, Occupation: Glen Hammar, Christine Hammar. We are both retired and we are loving every minute we are together.

How long have you been volunteering for Family Promise and how did you get involved? 5 years. My parents were involved and they were so excited about the people and service.

Why do you volunteer? Because we love people and want to serve and enjoy getting to know others. There are so many wonderful people in this world and so little time.

What is your favorite part of volunteering for Family Promise? That’s an easy answer. Being with the families. We love every minute we get to spend with them.

Do you have any favorite memories from your time serving Family Promise? The children love us. With Glen’s gray hair he looks like a Grandpa, which he is, so the children area drawn to him and to me. We love seeing and knowing that the families go on. It is very fun for us to see our families around town and get to visit with them.

Do you belong to a congregation or are you an unaffiliated volunteer? Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Do you have any kids and/or pets? We have four married children, two boys and two girls. We have 13+1 (due in December, a girl) grandchildren. We have 6 grandsons and 8 granddaughters. We have enjoyed pets all our lives, but we do not have any at this time.

From looking at you, no one would guess that…We feel in love as kids and have been married for 45 years. It is true that Christine married the man she loved when she was in 4th grade.

Favorite place to eat: This is a hard question, there are so many. Glen: Montana Rib and Chop; Christine: Olive Garden. We both really like P.F. Chang’s.

What’s on your book shelf? Christine: John Grisham (I worked in a law office), books about Yellowstone Park, Maeve Binchy, Rosamunde Pulcher Real Simple magazine. Glen: Tom Clancy, Vince Flynn, Clive Cussler, David Baldacci, fishing magazines

Who’s your hero? Parents. We both have amazing parents and came from wonderful homes.

A BIG congratulations and thank you to Glen and Chris Hammar for their stellar work as volunteers for Family Promise!
